Advanced Biofuels Process Development Unit—Analytical Chemistry

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBNL) Advanced Biofuels Process Development Unit (ABPDU) enables collaborations with researchers in the bio-products industry, national laboratories and academia to optimize and scale technologies to enable the commercialization of bio-based chemicals, materials and fuels.

Researchers at ABPDU’s analytical chemistry laboratory investigate biomass properties at various stages during the conversion process to provide information to define, improve, and verify technology innovation and enable robust process development. Laboratory capabilities include: Pretreatment and extraction/catalysis at high pressures, saccharification and extraction/catalysis at ambient pressure, fermentation and biocatalysis, advanced recovery and purification, analytical chemistry and materials handling/solids characterization.
